  • FishPath

Brian has worked with The Nature Conservancy as the principal software developer and content manager of the FishPath Tool for over 5 years. The FishPath Tool is a web-based decision support tool helping users choose harvest strategy options that are well suited for their fishery. Brian is part of the FishPath Network and has supported FishPath engagements around the world. The FishPath Tool is developed using the React framework and Node.js which are widely used, responsive web technologies.

  • Harvest Control Rule Design Tool

Working closely with Josh Nowlis of Bridge Environment, we developed a custom interactive R Shiny application to aid managers in designing harvest control rules. We continue to support Bridge Environment in refining the tool, as well as supporting its use in fishery management engagements.

  • Harvest Strategy Database

Working with New South Wales Government (Department of Primary Industries), we created a searchable database of published Australian fisheries harvest strategies. The database includes easy searching and filtering functions that allow fisheries managers, scientists and other stakeholders to quickly find and explore harvest strategies and their components. A low-code solution was utilized to allow for quick, low-cost modifications to the database and visualization UI as the project grows. We also utilized AI to extract the key data from the documents for input into the structured database schema, greatly reducing time needed to construct and update the dataset moving forward. This project was supported by funding from the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (Project 2019/021) on behalf of the Australian Government.

  • FishKit

Supported Nature Analytics with the development of FishKit, a collection of Shiny apps making fisheries science more accessible. Upwell Solutions focused on database design, developing the server functionality for a number of new features and developing UI components.

  • FishualizeR

FishualizeR is a Shiny application that is a supplement to a FAO Technical Manual about data preparation and exploration (in prep). The app allows users to perform all data exploration steps discussed without needing to have any experience working with R. You can use the app for free by clicking here.
